Full-Size Airbag

Airbags reduce the risk of serious head and chest injuries in collisions which are serious enough to cause them. If the crash sensors register an impact severe enough to activate the airbags, the airbag control unit triggers a gas generator. This fills the airbags, which are located in the steering wheel and in the dashboard on the passenger side (front airbags), in the space of 30 to 40 milliseconds. The activated airbags cushion the head and upper body and distribute the forces across as large an area as possible. After just 120 milliseconds, the gas escapes and the airbag collapses. The reduced movement of the neck helps to reduce the risk of injury. Optimal protection is only ensured if occupants are wearing their seat belts correctly, as belt tensioners and airbags combine to form an entire safety system. As well as the front airbags, side airbags are also available. (see also: head/thorax side airbag, side airbag)
