| Traffic Message Channel (TMC)The Traffic Message Channel (TMC) is a digital data channel provided by the traffic news service that supplies continuously updated traffic data. When a route has been selected, Volkswagen navigation systems with dynamic route guidance make use of these data to check the traffic conditions, and in particular the traffic flow.
If the Traffic Message Channel indicates that there is a traffic jam or other hold-up on the selected route, the navigation system automatically calculates an alternative route to the specified destination, and changes the route guidance accordingly without the driver having to intervene. When this occurs, the navigation system takes into account the time required for the alternative route. If this is longer than driving through the traffic jam, then the route is not changed.
This information is transmitted throughout Germany in a standardised form. The Traffic Message Channel is now also available in much of Europe. Data is transmitted digitally as part of RDS and is not dependent on any one language. Information is displayed in the user's own language. |
